It reduces performance loss caused by transport downtime and head operation, which translates to improved actual efficiency. Yamaha Motor Europe Robotics SMT Division announced that the new YRM20DL pick&place machine will be launched on April 3, 2023.

The YRM20DL is a high-performance modular premium device that achieves better actual and surface performance due to a newly developed high-stability dual-lane conveyor, which reduces downtime losses. The model is based on the flagship YRM20, which is characterized by high performance, precision, and versatility. The YRM20DL supports a maximum PCB width of up to 330mm on both lanes simultaneously. For parallel assembly on both lanes, both heads can operate without interruption for PCBs up to a maximum length of 380mm, enabling high-efficiency assembly without losses.

The device has been optimized to achieve a performance level of 120,000 CPH (under optimal conditions), the highest speed in its class worldwide, along with higher assembly accuracy of ±15µm (Cpk≥1.0). These parameters were achieved by changing the layout to bring the component pickup and placement points closer together, optimizing motion control in all axes, improving the conveyor’s rigidity, and enhancing correction functions.

Yamaha Motor has realized the 1 STOP SMART SOLUTION concept by leveraging its strengths as a manufacturer of production equipment, including pick&place machines, printers, dispensers, and inspection systems. The company promotes the Intelligent Factory system, which comprehensively improves assembly process efficiency through seamless and advanced cooperation between devices without black boxes.

Market background and product overview

In addition to the rapid electrification of powertrains and automotive electronics, many products such as home appliances, personal computers, and mobile phones have seen increasingly rapid miniaturization, high-density integration, high functionality, and diversification, as well as shortened production cycles. In response, there has been progress in component miniaturization and the introduction of higher performance and efficiency equipment, characterized by greater flexibility and efficiency, contributing to a radical increase in production capacity in manufacturing plants. However, as these efficiencies improved, the proportion of fixed-value losses, such as transport time in line to the overall production time, also came into focus.

Therefore, Yamaha Motor has newly developed the YRM20DL, a dual-lane version of the YRM20, which is the latest flagship pick&place device using a next-generation platform. The device supports various dual-lane production methods, such as transporting two PCBs of the same type and parallel assembly, transporting two different types of PCBs, and alternating assembly. This enables the optimal production system to be tailored for each product type. As a result, fixed-value losses, such as transport losses, can be significantly reduced in a wide range of SMT production lines, from high-speed mass production to diverse low-volume production, along with improved actual efficiency.

Main Features of the YRM20DL

Achieves higher speed and higher accuracy through improved core performance

By changing the dynamic layout, the unit achieved the highest class level of 120,000 CPH (under the company’s optimal conditions). This was achieved by minimizing the length of movement by bringing the pickup and placement areas closer to each of the two heads and further optimizing overall motion control in the axes. High assembly accuracy of ±15µm (Cpk≥1.0) was achieved by increasing the rigidity of the newly developed conveyor and correction function. The RM/HM head supports the assembly of ultra-small components with a size of 0201 (0.25 x 0.125 mm) and high-density component assembly on PCBs.

Use of the newly developed dual-lane conveyor, which reduces time losses and increases productivity

The newly developed high-rigidity dual-lane conveyor supports PCBs with a maximum width of up to 330 mm, with PCBs of the same width being transported on both lanes. The very fast rotary RM head allows the front and rear heads to operate without any interference up to a maximum PCB length of 380 mm, enabling highly efficient assembly without head downtime losses. During single-lane production, where only one of the two lines is used, it is possible to transport PCBs with a maximum length of 810 mm, a maximum width of 610 mm, a transport weight of 3 kg, and a maximum PCB thickness of up to 6.5 mm. This new model is also compatible with a wide range of very large PCB sizes, including products in the automotive, industrial, medical, energy device, and LED lighting industries.

The head can be chosen from among 3 types:

– Ultra-fast rotary RM head

– In-line HM head, which combines high speed and great versatility with the “1 Head Solution,” which can handle ultra-small chip components to larger components with one head type

– In-line FM head, which can handle high and custom-shaped components.

Support for various labor-saving functions:

– ALF feeder – with an automatic reloading function that can easily replenish tapes at any time without stopping production

– eATS30, an automatic tray feeder that can feed trays in pallet/magazine units without stopping production

– Feeder loading/unloading trolleys, which allow preparation for feeder trolley replacement without stopping production on one lane.

– Automatic pin replacement, significantly reducing labor for product changeovers.

Consistency and Ease of Maintenance:

– Nozzle management by ID, which allows optimization of maintenance depending on the number of uses of a given nozzle

– Self-diagnosis and self-repair functions maintain the ready-to-use state of nozzles and feeders, allowing high production quality by warning the user of possible problems before they occur.
